“日本語訳の「帝王切開」はドイツ語の「Kaiserschnitt」の翻訳が最初と言われ、ドイツ語の「Kaiser＝皇帝」、「Schnitt＝手術」よりの訳語である。 語源として現在もっとも有力な説は、古代ローマにおいて妊婦を埋葬する際に胎児をとり出す事を定めたLex Caesareaにあるとされている。

さらに「Kaiserschnitt」の語源であるラテン語の「sectio caesarea」は「切る」と言う意味の単語二つが、重複している。これが各言語に翻訳されるにあたり、「caesarea」を本来の「切る」という意味ではなく、カエサルと勘違いしたのが誤訳の原因であるという説もある。”
